I found myself asking, do we actually need an enemy to be motivated to do better? Sports teams are notorious in telling their […]

ETHNOCENTRISM!!!   What a challenging word to spell, let alone pronounce. I first became aware of my Ethnocentric tendencies in first year University Planning School. Professor George Rich, the grand poobah at Waterloo Planning loved his annual lecture on the Perils of Ethnocentrism…”the placing of your values upon someone else’s.”   Professor Rich would hammer […]

FRIENDSHIP!!!   I was recently reminded about the importance of Friendship when an ‘old friend’ made the effort to connect after several months apart. Bob made the effort to connect for no reason at all…just to see how I was doing!!! How special is that? How remarkable did it make me feel. I concluded that […]

A gentleman came up to me after our recent PMA-RBC Economic Summit and said “Can I ask you a personal question? How can you be so positive, so up, all the time?” I answered… “drugs are an amazing invention!” Seriously though, it made me stop and think about an answer. I recall my mother saying to me when I was about 12 years old “You could be drowning up to your neck in catastrophe and still be smiling!” Was I born with this gift or did I learn it along the way? A little bit of the former and a lot of the latter. There is no question that attitude is an emotional state that can be controlled, changed and imparted from within…. it can be learned.

How many times are you confronted by a colleague, a friend, a partner or spouse claiming, “You are not really listening to me are you?” In a world gone mad with technology the trend to multitasking has ‘Pearl Harboured’ our ability to listen. I remembered the fabulous Nicky Joy, author of “selling is a Woman’s Game” & “What Winners Do To Win!” telling me once to “listen with your eyes”. What an incredible instruction! What she means is ‘to be in the present’ and ‘to be there’, focused upon whoever you’re in direct conversation.

There is no question that many of us will put off until tomorrow what we don’t have to do today. Procrastination is defined as an act to delay or postpone something that needs to be accomplished. We know we have to get it done but we put it off…we deflect and delay! Perhaps it will go away? Maybe it’s too difficult a task to confront and will get easier in time… it never does!! Avoiding a decision or confrontation is not a formula for success …quite the opposite…
