COUNTRY CLUB COMMUNITIES - AT HOME ON THE GOLF COURSE

I am a golf fanatic. Many of us have a specific passion in life from sports to theatre to the simple retreat of a great book. Mine is golf. I can think of no other endeavour that captures the dichotomy of social interaction with individual challenge. The game can be played as a casual event, a walk in the park, a wondrous, joyous experience with friends or family – or it can be played as a purely mental challenge constantly pitting physical skills against individual intestinal fortitude. The latter is what drives me crazy and of course creates a passion of the game – or as Mark Twain said – “golf is a good walk spoiled!”

Ten thousand of us have suffered from the same infliction as golf in the GTA became one of the fastest growing sports of the past decade. It’s not surprising then that the development industry recognizing the trend offered a remedy – the golf course community.

Clublink Corporation burst onto the scene in the early 1990’s with the initial acquisition of King Valley in King Township and Cherry Downs in Durham. Today Clublink operates over 40 public and private courses in Ontario and provides access to another 200 worldwide. The confluence of golf and real estate was a natural progression.

Clublink has been a remarkable builder and manager of spectacular golf and resort properties. Development of housing integrated into the golf landscape is their next challenge.

A partnership was created with Bill Daniels of the Kaitlin Group, a well-respected Toronto builder and developer, to form a new entity, Country Club Communities. Its express purpose is to enhance an existing golf course amenity with a compatible housing forum. Kaitlin brought two new projects to the Country Club mix with the Port of Newcastle, east of Metro on the shores of Lake Ontario, and Loyalist Country Club near Kingston. The noted talents of Andrew DeGasperis and Aspen Ridge Homes were engaged to develop the “infamous” Glen Abbey – “infamous “because I personally tried seven times to duplicate Tiger Wood’s averaging 216 yard shot from the bunker on the 18th hole over water to win last year’s Canadian Open. The only duplication was the scene from “Tin Cup”.
In the coming weeks Glen Abbey and King Valley will open with 65 and 80-foot frontage lots backing onto these world class gold courses. Target pricing will start in the $600,000 range to over a million.

According to Bill Daniels Country Club Communities is “a lifestyle choice combining the finest in golf with a broad range of housing types”. “King Valley and Glen Abbey are aimed at the high end of the market while Loyalist and Newcastle will provide more varied and affordable housing.” Watch for Country Club Communities to make a big splash on the Toronto housing scene this fall – just like I did on the 18th at Glen Abbey. Country Club Communities are, of course, not the first to provide a golf housing opportunity. There have been many successful golf course communities in the GTA over the past several years. Monarch’s Millcroft in Burlington and Schickendanz’s Ballantrae north of Markham have proven that there is an insatiable demand to live and play in a golf environment. Country Club Communities will offer a new dimension and opportunity to satisfy this passion for golf with outstanding residential development.
